What Font Does Spotify Use?

The font Spotify uses is called Spotify Circular, which is a tweaked version of Gotham. Circular comes in five weights, with italic variants. This font was designed by Andreas Holmström (Lead Designer), and Christian Wilsson (Creative Director).

The Spotify logo redesign was part of a greater brand refresh, where font selection was key. According to Lead Designer, Andreas Holmström, selecting a font to base the logo on, was all about communicating the new brand positioning; easy, personal, and fun. As a result, they wanted a clean, simple, geometric typeface that is also round and friendly.

With these criteria in mind, the design team chose Gotham as a starting point. Gotham is a typeface designed by Tobias Frere-Jones in 2000, and it takes inspiration from the architectural signage seen in New York City. With Gotham as the foundation, there was still some tweaking required to make the font their own, and better speak to the new brand strategy. The design team needed to take the edge off to give it a more easy and more fun appearance.

There are a few key changes that you will notice. First, they rounded the dot on the “i” (the Tittle, in typographic terms). Second, all the corners were subtly rounded. Also the “f” to “y” way fully connected as a ligature. I must say, the Spotify logo font looks ever so slightly heavier in weight than the original Gotham medium.
